Anise - Pimpinella anisum (in the Apiaceae or Parsley family)

Parts used: Ripe seeds.

Taste/smell: Sweet, aromatic.

Tendencies: Warming.

Dosage: Infusion:1 heaping teaspoon of coarsely powdered herb per cup of water; or 1:3 dry plant liquid extract: 10-40 drops 1-4 times per day in a little water.

Use: (a) Carminative, (b) Flavoring agent, (c) Expectorant, (d) Mild antispasmodic, (e) Lactagogue.

Due to its actions and great taste, it is commonly used for children's complaints. Anise is used for coughs, asthma, bronchitis and a digestive aid.

Think of Anise as an herb that increases overall secretions, such as milk flow, urine, sweating, and menstruation.

Contraindications: It is contraindicated in pregnancy unless used under the guidance of a trained professional.
