Blue Flag - Iris versicolor in the Liliaceae or Lily family
Part used: Rhizome.
Taste/Smell: Acrid.
Tendencies: Cooling and drying.
Dosage: Infusion: 1:2 fresh strength liquid extract: 1-3 drops 1-3 times per day in a little water.
Mental picture and specific indications: Iris is specific for hepatic and splenic congestion due to venous or lymphatic stasis with soft, swollen nodes.
Use: (a) Alterative for chronic septic conditions, (b) Lymphagogue, (c) Cholagogue, (d) Diuretic.
Iris acts on the thyroid, intestinal glands, liver, pancreas and lymphatic system. It is used for migraine headaches. They often start as frontal headaches and come on after stress, during a relaxed period and are better with motion.
This herb is used in small amounts and not for long term use generally.
Contraindications: The fresh root may cause dermatitis. Toxic doses cause burning in mouth and throat, nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, abdominal burning and severe gastroenteritis resulting in death. This herb should only be used under the supervision of a qualified health care practitioner. It is contraindicated in pregnancy.
