Hyssop - Hyssopus officinalis in the Lamiaceae or Mint family

Parts used: Budding aerial parts.

Taste/smell: Slightly bitter, sharp flavored, spicy, aromatic.

Tendencies: Drying, stimulating and relaxing.

Dosage: Infusion: 1 teaspoon per cup of water; or 1:1 fresh + dry strength liquid extract: 10-60 drops 1-4 times per day in a little water.

Mental picture and specific indications: Hyssop is indicated in infectious conditions of the lungs and digestive system. It is specific for chronic low-grade fevers with a rapid and flooding pulse. It is especially useful for children's respiratory and digestive infections.

Use: (a) Antiviral, (b) Cholagogue, (c) Expectorant, (d) Vulnerary, (e) Carminative, (f) Astringent.

Hyssop is used for indigestion, influenza, colds and a gargle for sore throats. It is beneficial for low-grade continual fevers with septic conditions, especially when related to viral infections.

Contraindications: It is contraindicated in pregnancy due to the emmenagogue and abortifacient effects.
