Lavender - Lavandula angustifolia in the Lamiaceae or Mint family

Part used: Flowers.

Taste/Smell: Bitter, aromatic.

Tendencies: Cool, drying.

Dosage: Infusion: 1 - 2 teaspoons per cup of water; or 1:5 dry liquid extract: 10-30 drops 1-4 times per day in a little water.

Mental picture and specific indications: It is specific for headache, muscle spasms, convulsions, stammering and symptoms due to nervousness related to a lack of circulation to the brain.

Use: (a) Spasmolytic, (b) Anti-inflammatory, (c) Carminative, (d) Stomachic, (e) Diuretic, (f) Mild sedative for nervous exhaustion, (g) Stress, (h) Insomnia.

The essential oil is used externally for burns and wounds. Lavender has been shown to improve wound healing. Lavender is used as an olfactory inhalant for its calming and reassuring effects. The herb has also been shown to be beneficial for anxiety when given internally. Lavender is additionally a useful aid in insomnia and depression.

Contraindications: It is contraindicated in pregnancy due to the emmenagogue effects unless used under the guidance of a qualified health care practitioner.
