Lungwort - Sticta pulmonaria in the Lichenes or Lichen family

Part used: Whole lichen.

Taste/smell: Slightly bitter.

Dosage: Decoction: 1 tablespoon per cup of water; or 1:5 dry strength liquid extract: 10-40 drops 1-4 times per day.

Mental picture and specific indications: The individual has a sense of dullness, confusion and malaise, as if the beginning of a cold. There is a dull, heavy pressure in the forehead with catarrh and pain through the chest from the sternum to the spinal column. The cough is worse towards evening and when tired and general symptoms are worse with sudden temperature changes. There may be rheumatic pains with spasms.

Use: (a) Astringent, (b) Expectorant, (c) Antimicrobial.

Lungwort is indicated for respiratory tract infections with pain and stiffness in the chest, neck and shoulders. It is specific for acute and sub-acute inflammatory conditions with bronchial irritation accompanied by a dry hacking cough. It is beneficial for bronchitis, croup, pertussis and chronic asthma.
