Meadowsweet is used in colds, flu, rheumatoid arthritis and inflammation of the nerves, muscles and skin. It usually takes a few hours for it to be noticed in the body, so it is not quick acting.
Salicin and salicylic acid have been shown to modulate the inflammatory process.
Salicin is metabolized into the pharmacological active form, salicylic acid, in the gastrointestinal system. Salicin is converted into the aglycone called saligenin (AKA salicyl alcohol) by intestinal flora in the distal ilium and colon. Once absorbed, it is further changed into salicylic acid which is effective for several hours.
Contraindications: Meadowsweet may cause allergic hypersensitivity in persons sensitive to salicylates.
