Wild indigo - Baptisia tinctoria in the Fabaceae or Legume family

Part used: Fresh root.

Taste/smell: Acrid, astringent.

Tendencies: Cooling.

Dosage: 1:1 fresh strength liquid extract: 2-10 drops 1-4 times per day.

Mental picture and specific indications: Wild indigo is indicated when the pulse is intermittent, black or blue tongue, lack of blood flow to an area causing dusky colored tissues, ulcerations, putrid and offensive excretions, foul breath and muscle soreness. The individual may experience confusion, delirium, muttering, indifference to everything and sleepy, even stuporous, melancholy. The mind may wander and it may be hard to think.

Use: (a) Alterative, (b) Antimicrobial, (c) Immunomodulator, (d) Lymphagogue, (e) Bitter, (f) Choleretic, (g) Cholagogue.

Wild indigo assists the body’s natural resistance to micro-organisms and toxins. It is used for septic conditions with ulceration and tissue degeneration.   Wild indigo promotes normal cellular metabolism that supports healthy tissues. It is indicated for asthenic symptoms, low fevers, septic conditions of the blood, poisoning, extreme prostration, ulcerative colitis, amebic dysentery, tonsillitis, cellulitis and local cervical erosion.

Contraindications: It is contraindicated during pregnancy. Large doses are toxic, inducing signs and symptoms of nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, ptyalism, tachycardia, respiratory paralysis and death. Wild indigo should only be used under the guidance of a qualified health care practitioner.
