Yerba santa - Eriodictyon californicum in the Hydrophyllaceae or Waterleaf family

Part used: Leaves.

Taste/smell: Sweet, sticky, aromatic.

Tendencies: Warming.

Dosage: Infusion: 1 heaping teaspoon per cup of water, infused for 25 minutes; or 1:4 dry liquid extract: 10-50 drops 1-4 times per day.

Mental picture and specific indications: Yerba santa is indicated in respiratory and digestive weakness.

Use: (a) Expectorant, (b) Bronchodilator, (c) Antimicrobial, (d) Carminative.

Yerba santa is used for colds, laryngitis, bronchitis, asthma, hay fever and any condition where there is a cough with poor expectoration. It aids in digestion and is used for the treatment of bladder infections. Externally, it can be applied to bruises, inflammations and rheumatic pain.

Contraindications: Information unavailable at this time. All resinous liquid extracts of herbs like Yerba santa will precipitate in water and stick to the container or glass.
